Myths and legends
The most fascinating aspect
of Irish culture that I learned about by watching the Story of Ireland was that
there are many legends and myths about the Irish culture. They are even divided
into four different cycles: The Mythological Cycle, Fenian Cycle, Ulster Cycle
and the Historical Cycle. Each of them covers a different sort of myth. The
myths and legends are based on voyages across the ocean, great battles with
heroes fighting to their death to defend their country, as well as numerous
invasions. Ireland was invaded by the Romans and the Vikings and some of the
legends tell about these periods of time. The legends were passed on orally
throughout the centuries and details were added or left out, because in the
past many people were not able to read or write except monks. In the Middle
Ages, monks finally began to write down these fascinating and captivating
stories. Today, however, we cannot be sure how many of the original myths and
legends have been preserved by monks, because some of them would have been
based around pagan beliefs.
I learned many new facts about Ireland due to the culture project we did in class. For me it was very interesting to read about the different myths and legends, e.g. the Children of Lir. This time I have managed to write a well-structured paragraph with only some little mistakes. I have learned from this paragraph that it is advisable to use passive constructions if you want to slightly change the meaning of a sentence.
